18th-rated Mavericks take down Beavers

Minot, N.D. — 18th-rated Minnesota State wrestling won its first Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual of the year, posting a 31-9 win over Minot State.

With the win, the Mavericks improve to 1-0 in NSIC action, while the Beavers drop to 0-1.

To start the dual, MSU was awarded six points in the 125-weight class and Minot State claimed six points for the 133-weight class. MSU would go on to claim the next six weight classes. Earning the 31-9 victory.

Fourth-rated Alphonso Vruno (Fr. 141 lbs.) recorded the largest decision of the night earning a 7-1 decision over Zachary Cummings

Junior Jeremy Kelly (149 lbs.) and freshman Adam Cooling (157 lbs.) each won their respective matches by one point.

Top-rated Cody Quinn (Jr. 165 lbs.) made his first appearance of the season for the Mavericks, posting a 6-3 decision over Marcus Polak.

Freshman Darick Vancura (174 lbs.) opened conference action with a 14-2 major decision against Tiger Paasch. Sophomore Scott VanDeLoo (184 lbs.) was the only Maverick to not give up a point, earning a 2-0 decision against Matt Fetterley.

Minot State did earn 3 points in a tiebreaker as Mitchell Eull beat Mike Kessler (Fr. 197 lbs.), 3-2.

The Beavers forfeited the final match against Corby Running (Sr. 285 lbs.) to complete the dual.

Minnesota State will travel to Bismarck, N.D. to compete in its second dual of the season against the University of Mary on Saturday.
