BROOKINGS, S.D. – Augustana placed five wrestlers to kick off the 2013-14 season at the Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open on Sunday. The Vikings had 20 attached wrestlers compete at the South Dakota State-hosted open which featured two Division I teams ranked in the top 15 and six Division I teams sending competitors.
Shawn Hatlestad advanced to the semifinals with wins over three Division I opponents before losing a major decision to University of Missouri’s Drake Houdashelt 11-1 to eventually placed sixth. The sophomore 149-pounder pinned Northern Illinois’ Austin Culton in 5:14 and won by decision over South Dakota State and Missouri wrestlers on the way to the final four before suffering his first loss of the tournament.
After losing by injury default in the consolation bracket, Hatlestad forfeited his fifth-place bout to take sixth. The Vikings had a strong showing from all three 149-pound wrestlers finishing with a combined 8-7 record despite Hatlestad not wrestling in his final two bouts.
